Types of Fruit Trees

Fruit Tree Care
Light:
Fruit trees in Cape Town thrive in full sun (6-8 hours daily) for optimal fruit production. Varieties like citrus, apples, and peaches require plenty of sunlight to develop healthy fruit. Some fruit trees can tolerate partial shade, but their yield may be reduced.
Watering:
Check soil moisture before watering to avoid overwatering, especially during the dry summer months. Ensure the soil has good drainage to prevent root rot. Water deeply and consistently, ideally in the early morning, to allow the soil to dry out before evening.
Temperature:
Fruit trees in Cape Town prefer a stable environment between 18-24°C. Some varieties, like citrus and stone fruits, can tolerate higher temperatures, but they may require protection from extreme heat, especially in summer, provide some shade or shelter during peak heat. For young trees, mulch tree bases to reduce evaporation
Fertilising:
Use a balanced fertiliser during the growing season (spring and summer), following the recommended dosage. Apply fertiliser every 6-8 weeks to encourage healthy fruit growth. Be sure to use a fertiliser with higher potash levels designed for fruit trees to support proper flower development and fruit production.
Pruning:
Regular pruning is essential for fruit trees to promote strong growth, improve air circulation, and prevent disease. Remove dead or damaged branches, and thin the tree to allow sunlight to reach all parts of the plant. Prune after fruiting to encourage new growth for the next season.
Pest Management:
Monitor fruit trees for pests such as Aphids, Scale, Leaf Curl Caterpillars, and Fruit Flies. Treat promptly with Organic Insecticides to protect the trees. Regular inspection and pest control will help ensure healthy fruit and minimise damage.
