Succulent Plant Care
Light:
Succulents in Cape Town thrive in full sun (6-8 hours daily), as they are adapted to the region’s sunny, dry climate. Varieties like Aloes, Echeveria, and Sedum require plenty of direct sunlight to grow and maintain their compact, vibrant forms. Some succulents can tolerate partial shade, but they generally perform best in bright, sunny spots.
Watering:
Succulents are drought-tolerant and prefer well-drained soil. Be sure to check soil moisture before watering to avoid overwatering, as succulents are highly sensitive to waterlogged conditions. Ensure that pots or garden beds have good drainage to prevent root rot. Water deeply but infrequently and allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Watering should be done in the morning to prevent fungal issues.
Temperature:
Succulents grow best in temperatures between 18-24°C, but they can tolerate higher temperatures. They are quite heat-resistant, but during extreme summer heat, it’s essential to provide some shade or protection from the harsh midday sun to avoid sunburn. If growing indoors, keep them in a room with stable temperatures and avoid placing them near cold drafts.
Fertilising:
Use a balanced, designed for Succulents or Cacti during the growing season (spring and summer). Apply according to the recommended dosage. Over-fertilising can lead to weak, leggy growth, so limit feeding to once every 4-6 weeks. Succulents generally require less fertiliser than other plants.
Pruning:
Pruning succulents is minimal, but it helps maintain a neat appearance. Remove any dead or damaged leaves and cut back any long, leggy growth to promote a more compact form. Some succulents, like Jade Plants, may also benefit from occasional shaping to maintain a bushy structure.
Pest Management:
Monitor succulents for pests such as Mealybugs, Scale and Fungal Infections. If pests are detected, treat promptly with Organic Insecticides. Ensure that you check the undersides of leaves and any crevices where pests tend to hide. Early intervention will help prevent damage to your succulents.
