Growing Vegetables & Herbs in Pots

Growing your own vegetables and herbs is easier than many people think!!! You don’t need a large garden to get started. With the right pot size, good drainage, quality potting soil, and the correct position, you can grow a surprising amount of fresh produce in containers.

Container gardening is perfect for patios, balconies, courtyards, small gardens, and sunny kitchen door spaces. It also gives you more control over your soil, watering, and feeding, which can make growing herbs and vegetables far more manageable.

Below is a handy pot size guide showing which vegetables and herbs are better suited to smaller pots and which ones need more root space to grow well. The pot you choose has a big effect on how well your plant grows.

A pot that is too small can:

  • dry out quickly
  • restrict root growth
  • leave plants struggling

A larger pot:

  • gives roots more room
  • holds moisture for longer
  • supports stronger, healthier growth
  • Choose pots with drainage holes.
  • Use good quality potting soil, not heavy garden soil.
  • Place sun-loving vegetables where they receive enough light.
  • Water regularly, but do not let pots sit in water.
  • Feed during active growth to keep plants strong.
  • Harvest often, especially herbs and leafy greens, to encourage fresh new growth.

Growing in pots is practical, rewarding, and surprisingly fun. Start small, choose what you love to eat, and build your little kitchen garden one pot at a time.
